POPEYE in a nutshell

POPEYE is a multinational  research project addressing peer-to-peer (P2P) collaboration architectures over hetero-geneous mobile ad-hoc networks (MANET).  Successfully completed on 31st July 2008, POPEYE has defined concepts and delivered methods and core application services for the next generation mobile collaborative working environments, featuring P2P information exchange and collaboration over MANETs.

The POPEYE vision

  • Opportunistic ad hoc networking: meet and join
    • enable creative usage of networked portable devices
    • without the need of supporting infrastructure
  • Spontaneous networks: set-up quickly working groups
    • dependable and secure
    • with or without relying on an infrastructure, suitable for professional usage

POPEYE is a Specific Targeted Research Project (STREP)
part-funded by the EU under the 6th Framework Program,
IST priority, Contract No. IST-2006-034241

Why POPEYE?
Next generation collaborative systems will offer mobile users seamless and natural collaboration within distributed, knowledge rich and virtualised working environments. This ambitious goal faces numerous challenges, including the underlying communication infrastructure, security, the limited capabilities of mobile handheld devices, the need of high level application services.

POPEYE addressed this area, with the objective of investigating key technologies and solutions for next generation mobile collaborative environments and applications.

Results

POPEYE research has produced a multi-layered, scalable, open framework enabling the development of integrated collaborative applications in an infrastructure free environment.

Key features include:

  • dynamic peer connection/ disconnection
  • multi-hop peers communication
  • distributed data sharing and persistency
  • dynamic workspace management
  • dynamic context management and security
  • support for application development
