Instytut Transportu Samochodowego (Motor Transport Institute, ITS) began its activity in 1952, upon the issue of the regulation No. 593 by the Council of Ministers, published in Monitor Polski A-7/1952. The Institute’s activities are country wide. The research problems that the Institute has dealt with over the past 55 years were constantly changing. They were a result of the national economy needs as well as transport ones, together with technical and organisational progress, both within the economy and transport. At present, strategic directions of the Institute’s activities are primarily:

  • organisation, functioning and effectiveness of the road transport;
  • safety improvements for the road traffic participants;
  • limiting negative environmental impact of the road transport development;
  • innovative design and material solutions for the road transport means, their elements as well as service materials.

The Institute has highly qualified scientific personnel, working in the laboratories and workrooms equipped with the state of the art testing and measuring equipment. The recognition for the Institute’s achievements manifests itself in its involvements in the work of numerous international scientific bodies and participation in European research projects.

The Institute’s achievements are presented at various international congresses and conferences. The Institute operates according to the quality management system implemented according to the PN-EN ISO 9001:2001 standard. Furthermore, it has five research laboratories accredited according to PN-EN ISO/IEC 17025:2005 standard, personnel certifying body accredited according to PN-EN ISO/IEC 17024:2004 standard, product certification body accredited according to PN-EN 45011:2000 standard, as well as inspection body according to the PN-EN ISO/IEC 17020:2006 standard requirements. At present, the Institute is in the course of implementing information security management system according to PN-ISO/IEC 27001:2007 standard.
