The Institute of Communications and Computer Systems (ICCS) was founded in 1989 as an independent institution closely associated with the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (SECE) of the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) (est. 1837), which is the oldest and most prestigious academic institute in Greece. Its mission is to host and promote high quality research in all fields relevant with the SECE expertise (i.e., communications, computers, networks, control, multimedia, expert systems, components, biomedical engineering, education and management, etc.). As such, it serves as an umbrella of a large number of R&D laboratories and activities.

The Computer Networks Laboratory (CNL) of ICCS aims to remain ahead of the wave of change in mobile technologies and service engineering by cooperating with industry and academia in mobile application related projects. To this end, in the FP6 IST framework, CNL has participated in the IST-DAIDALOS IP (performing work on the design, integration and validation of heterogeneous network technologies), in the IST-AmiGo IP (aiming to develop open, standardised, interoperable middleware and intelligent user services for networked environments), as well as a project coordinator in the IST-MOTIVE STREP (researching on user location techniques, end-to-end monitoring of user perceived QoS in mobile networks, and anonymous mobile community services). Currently, in the FP7 ICT framework, CNL participates in the ICT-PERSIST STREP (towards the development of Personal Smart Spaces that cater for the needs of users, adapt to their preferences and learn new ones as these arise). CNL has highly qualified members with extensive expertise in the areas of mobile and personal communications, service and software engineering, machine learning, and context-aware and pervasive computing.
